🌍 What happens if I stay in Turkey without legal status?

Foreign nationals who stay in Turkey without a valid visa, residence permit, or other legal basis may face administrative consequences. These may include overstay fines, entry bans, deportation procedures, and in some cases, administrative detention, depending on the duration and nature of the violation. In many cases, fines must be paid upon exit from Turkey. Failure to comply with legal obligations or ignoring official procedures may lead to more severe consequences. The longer the period of illegal stay, the more serious the legal risks may become.

🚔 Can I be detained for an immigration violation in Turkey?

Yes. In certain cases, foreign nationals may be placed under administrative detention if there is a risk of absconding, identity cannot be verified, or deportation procedures are initiated.

⚠️ Detention is not automatic and must be based on legal grounds.

⚖️ What is administrative detention in Turkey?

Administrative detention is a legal measure applied to foreign nationals in specific situations, usually in connection with deportation procedures. It is not a criminal penalty but a preventive administrative action.

🏢 What is a removal center (Geri Gönderme Merkezi) in Turkey?

A removal center is a facility where foreign nationals are held during deportation or administrative procedures. These centers are managed by migration authorities and are used when individuals are subject to removal decisions or administrative detention.

⏳ How long can a foreign national be held in a removal center?

The duration of administrative detention in Turkey is subject to legal limits and periodic review. As a general rule, administrative detention may be imposed for up to 6 months. However, in cases where deportation procedures cannot be completed due to lack of cooperation or delays in obtaining travel documents, this period may be extended for an additional 6 months, resulting in a maximum total of 12 months. Authorities are required to regularly review whether continued detention is necessary.

⚠️ Detention cannot be indefinite and must comply with legal safeguards and proportionality principles.

📞 Do I have the right to a lawyer during deportation proceedings?

Yes. Foreign nationals have the right to legal representation during deportation and detention procedures. Access to a lawyer is an important safeguard to ensure that legal rights are protected. In complex cases, obtaining legal support is strongly recommended.
